Switzerland

Switzerland really is like a postcard. Pristine lakes, stunning mountains, and beautiful scenery everywhere you look. A nature lover's dream come true.

The Matterhorn

My husband and I went to Switzerland together. We love hiking and being outdoors, and Switzerland has it all: hiking, biking, lake activities, and even more adventurous things like BASE jumping and mountain climbing. A sports lover's heaven. We hiked several days around the Matterhorn and got to see all 4 of its faces. It's shaped like a pyramid. On a clear day like this one, you can see its reflection in the lake perfectly.

Paragliding over Interlaken

My first time paragliding, in Interlaken, Switzerland! Interlaken literally means “between lakes,” and the town sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. From the air, we could see both lakes, with their beautiful emerald-blue water. The experience was not what I expected. Instead of jumping off a cliff, we simply walked down a grassy slope until the paraglider quickly lifted us into the air. My instructor was right behind me, and there was no dropping sensation at all. I get motion sickness easily, so I did feel a little dizzy as we circled higher and higher, riding the wind. I was surprised by how precisely the instructors could steer. My husband was flying with another instructor, and at one point we were almost right next to each other in the air! Such a fun adventure, and I felt safe from beginning to end.

Hiking to Lake Bachalpsee

We stayed a few days in Grindelwald, a charming mountain town with crisp, clean air, a lot cooler than Zurich, where we started our trip. From there, we hiked the First to Bachalpsee trail, with the snow-covered Alps in the background and the greenest pastures. The trail was clean and well kept, and it ended at Lake Bachalpsee. Just a perfect hiking day.

Biking the Lauterbrunnen Valley

We spent the whole morning e-biking through the Lauterbrunnen Valley. We saw so many waterfalls and a really powerful gorge, and rode along the river. Very peaceful. We had a picnic by a waterfall with Swiss cheese, bread, and of course, Swiss chocolate.

Car-free Zermatt

Zermatt was my favorite place we stayed in Switzerland. It's car-free, so just getting there was an adventure. We drove our car onto a train that carried it through a mountain tunnel, then parked at the station in Täsch and took a shuttle train into Zermatt. It's such a cute, cozy little town, full of charming restaurants and chocolate shops, with views of the Matterhorn right from town. The day we arrived, the Matterhorn was half covered in clouds, almost like they were stuck to the mountain, which is pretty common. But we got lucky with several days of perfectly clear views!

The Five Lakes hike

We did 2 hikes around the Matterhorn, and this was the Five Lakes hike, where you pass 5 beautiful lakes with the Matterhorn in view almost the entire time. The trail was mostly downhill, the lakes were crystal clear, and the weather was perfect. I was especially impressed by how accessible hiking is here, even for less experienced hikers or people who don't want to walk too much. You can take mountain lifts and funiculars up to the trails and enjoy incredible views without a strenuous climb.

Matterhorn Glacier Trail

For an even closer view of the Matterhorn, we took the cable car up to hike the Matterhorn Glacier Trail. What we had seen from afar on the Five Lakes hike was now right in front of us, with the Matterhorn towering above and the glacier up close. It was pretty amazing to see how the glacier had carved the landscape over time.
